What are biogenic amines?

Biogenic amines, often shortened to amines, are organic molecules naturally found in food, plants, nuts and animal products.

Small amounts of biogenic amines are a natural and healthy part of our diet. However, if intake becomes too high over time, or if the body has a reduced ability to break down histamines, it can lead to symptoms.

Typical symptoms of histamine intolerance

When you consume more histamines that the body can break down, you may experience symptoms such as:
  • Fatigue and exhaustion
  • Body aches
  • Low mood, depression or anxiety
  • Mood swings, stress or sleep issues
  • Sudden high heart rate
  • General feeling of illness
  • Muscle pain, stomach pain, or nausea
  • Headaches or migraines
  • Skin problems like rashes, eczema, hives, or itching
  • Other unexplained symptoms that come and go

Foods with high levels of amines

Some foods naturally contain high levels of biogenic amines. These include:
  • Meat and fish that are not completely fresh
  • Dark chocolate
  • Cheese
  • Cured meats and fermented foods
  • Broth
  • Nuts and seeds that are stored
  • Coconut
  • Red wine
  • Soft fruits and vegetables, such as bananas, broccoli, avocados, and raspberries

Although many of these foods are healthy and good for the gut, they can contain high levels of histamines, especially if they are stored. When the total intake exceeds the body's ability to break them down, symptoms can occur.
